Part 6 of my new year reset
Decluttering and Organizing My Basement for a Stress-Free Move
The one task I knew I needed to tackle before the move was organizing the basement. It’s the kind of job that gets pushed off for months—years even—because it’s out of sight, out of mind. But there’s one thing I refuse to let happen this time: chaos following me into my new home. No last-minute stress, no piles of random stuff shoved into boxes at the last second. I want this move to be smooth and organized, so I dedicated these colder months—when I’m not missing out on anything exciting anyway—to getting it done.
I started by sorting through the shelves (Regale = shelves/racks) that were filled with things I had accumulated over time. Random boxes, forgotten items, things I thought I might need "one day." The first step was switching to a storage system that actually makes sense. I replaced old, messy storage bins with transparent boxes so I can easily see what’s inside. No more guessing, no more digging through piles of stuff in frustration. Each box was labeled and categorized, making it easier to transport everything to the right rooms when the time comes. It’s a small change, but one that will save so much time and stress during the move.
But while decluttering, I stumbled upon something unexpected—my creative box. Over the years, I had thrown bits and pieces of my artistic supplies into different places, but now was the time to bring them all together. My future atelier is something I’ve been dreaming about, and I knew that if I wanted to step back into my creative flow, I needed to start by organizing what I already have.
As I gathered my paints, sketchbooks, fabrics, and tools into one place, something special happened. I found my old textile designs from university—a moment of nostalgia and excitement all in one. Seeing those designs again reminded me of how much I loved creating and why I want to get back into sewing and designing once I have more space. It was a full-circle moment, and in a way, this reset was more than just organizing my basement; it was about reconnecting with my past passions and preparing for the future.
Reflection:
Decluttering isn’t just about making space—it’s about making room for what truly matters. By organizing my basement now, I’m setting myself up for a stress-free move and a fresh start in my new home. I won’t have to deal with last-minute chaos, and more importantly, I’ll be stepping into a space that’s intentional, where everything has its place.
If you’ve been avoiding a big organizing project, take advantage of the colder months to get it done. No distractions, no excuses—just the opportunity to clear out what no longer serves you and make space for what’s to come. And if you’re like me, you might just stumble upon something that inspires you along the way.
Waves of love, always.
